Functional roles of coral reef primary producers examined with stable isotopes

چکیده
Context Primary production on coral reefs varies under changing conditions such as light and nutrient availability. This variation causes changes in basal stable isotopes photosynthetic pathways change.Aims study provides a preliminary baseline of nitrogen (δ15N) carbon (δ13C) isotope profiles Symbiodinium macroalgae at spatial scale along depth gradient around an island. Methods Coral fragments were collected depths from the surface to 26m. δ15N δ13C values assessed for relative cell density per area.Key results showed uniform profile across primary producers. However, chlorophyll-a Montipora stellata had higher concentrations southern side island. Stylophora pistillata did not change with depth. Depth was associated significant decrease density, macroalgae. Conclusions We attribute these findings S. increases, decreasing but maintaining concentration satisfy coral-host requirements.Implications sets scene future, more comprehensive research detecting producers reefs.

Effects of Coral Reef Benthic Primary Producers on Dissolved Organic Carbon and Microbial Activity
Benthic primary producers in marine ecosystems may significantly alter biogeochemical cycling and microbial processes in their surrounding environment. To examine these interactions, we studied dissolved organic matter release by dominant benthic taxa and subsequent microbial remineralization in the lagoonal reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia. Rates of photosynthesis, respiration, and dissolved ...
متن کاملSleeping Functional Group Drives Coral-Reef Recovery
The world's coral reefs are in decline, with many exhibiting a phase shift from coral to macroalgal dominance . This change is often associated with habitat loss and overharvesting of herbivorous fishes, particularly parrotfishes and surgeonfishes . The challenge is to reverse this decline and enhance the resilience of coral-reef ecosystems . We demonstrate, by using a large-scale experimentall...
متن کاملFunctional versatility supports coral reef biodiversity.
We explore the role of specialization in supporting species coexistence in high-diversity ecosystems. Using a novel ordination-based method to quantify specialist and generalist feeding structures and diets we examined the relationship between morphology and diet in 120 wrasses and parrotfishes from the Great Barrier Reef. We find that wrasses, despite their morphological diversity, exhibit wea...
متن کاملHydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia
As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
متن کاملBIFURCATION ANALYSIS OF A DDE MODEL OF THE CORAL REEF
In this paper, first we discuss a local stability analysis of model was introduced by P. J. Mumby et. al. (2007), with $frac{gM^{2}}{M+T}$ as the functional response term. We conclude that the grazing intensity is the important parameter to control the existence or extinction of the coral reef. Next, we consider this model under the influence of the time delay as the bifurcat...
